Sight Reading Tips
August 19, 2017
Sight reading can be a stressful task for many musicians. Whether you are preparing for the NYSSMA festival, a music major, or a professional or amateur musician, you will likely have to sight read at some point in your lifetime. Here are a few tips that will help you improve your sight reading skills.
1. Practice Scales and Arpeggios
Scales and arpeggios are your foundation. Know your scales and arpeggios forwards and backwards.
2. Familiarize Yourself With Tricky Rhythms
While every sight reading exercise is different, many of the patterns repeat themselves. Familiarizing yourself with a variety of rhythms will help you recognize patterns on the spot throughout the music.
3. Identify Key Signatures At-A-Glance
Being able to identify key signatures quickly is extremely important. You do not want to waste time trying to figure out what key the piece is in and which accidentals you will need to play.
4. Review Key Signature and Time Signature
Before you begin sight reading a piece of music, take a moment to review your key signature and time signature. Some people jump in and start playing and miss numerous accidentals. You don't want to fall into that trap! Make it part of your routine, and before you know it, it will be second nature.
5. Scan Music
Scan the music for tricky rhythms, intervals or passages. Consider dissecting those sections before you begin.
6. Break It Down
If you have a minute or two, break down the piece. I have all my singers first speak the solfege, then sing the exercise as a pitch pattern, then clap and count the rhythm, and lastly put the whole exercise together.
7. Keep Going
No matter what happens, keep going. If you make a mistake, make a mental note and keep playing. You can go back and fix any mistakes once you've finished.
8. Practice, Practice, Practice
Just like anything else, the number one trick to improve your sight reading ability is to practice. The more you practice, the easier sight reading will become.
